Cyclic AMP--an intracellular second messenger for interleukin 1.

چکیده
We demonstrated that interleukin 1 (IL-1), a potent peptide mediator in immune and inflammatory responses, stimulates the synthesis of cAMP in a variety of IL-1-responsive cell targets. We also showed that cAMP analogs and cAMP-inducing agents can replace IL-1 in the induction of interleukin 2 receptors on lymphocytes as well as in phytohemagglutinin-induced murine thymocyte proliferation. By use of IL-1 and the cAMP-inducer, forskolin, a direct correlation between the induced level of cAMP and the degree of lymphocyte interleukin 2 receptor expression or thymocyte proliferation was established. Our results indicate that cAMP may be an important intracellular second messenger for IL-1.

Effects of atrial natriuretic factor on cyclic nucleotides in rabbit proximal tubule.
Atrial natriuretic factor induces renal sodium excretion by several mechanisms, including inhibition of angiotensin II-stimulated sodium reabsorption in the proximal tubule. In most tissues, the action of atrial natriuretic factor involves generation of the intracellular second messenger, cyclic GMP, but in the proximal tubule the presence of this signal transduction pathway has remained contro...
متن کاملThe effects of derivatives of adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate on fluid secretion by the salivary glands of Calliphora.
Fluid secretion by the salivary glands of the blowfly Calliphora is regulated by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) (Berridge, 1970, 1972; Berridge & Prince, 1972). The action of 5-HT is apparently mediated by adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) which thus functions as an intracellular 'second messenger' as has been postulated in many other systems (Robison, Butcher & Sutherland, 1968). Exogenou...

The transfer of information by chemical signals during complex biological processes can, with increasing frequency, be described in terms of interacting signal pairs. External signalling is rarely monolithic; rather, signal pairs are utilized in processes such as hormone secretion, neurotransmission, cell growth and differentiation. The dualism of external signalling often results in the occurr...
متن کاملCyclic nucleotides in glutamate chemosensory signal transduction of Paramecium.
Glutamate is an attractant stimulus to Paramecium tetraurelia. It causes a hyperpolarization of the cell and smooth, relatively fast swimming that is characteristic of hyperpolarizing stimuli. We show here that by 1-30 seconds of stimulation, glutamate increases intracellular cAMP. Interestingly, other attractant stimuli, such as acetate and NH4Cl, that similarly hyperpolarize the cell do not i...

The discovery of adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) has provided a focal point for studies on the mode of action of hormones. Cyclic AMP seems to function as an ' intracellular second messenger' mediating the action of many different hormones (Sutherland, 0ye & Butcher, 1965; Sutherland & Robison, 1966; Robison, Butcher & Sutherland, 1968). The primary hormonal message arriving at a cel...
